The department is particularly active in research on international political economy and globalization, Norway's relations with the EU and the EEA and the restructuring and modernization of the public sector. Research focuses on restructuring the business policy, industrial cooperation and changes in regulation regimes.

Furthermore, we are concerned with the role of the public sector in decision-making processes, regulatory regimes, the changing nature of public goods, and how these changes feed into policy development and the decision-making processes. Our empirical knowledge is drawn from a wide range of sectors, with special emphasis on health policy, health care economics, energy-, telecommunications-, and climate policy.

The department house some of Norway’s leading experts on the EU and the EEA, globalisation, and on the restructuring and modernisation of the public sector. We have undertaken several large research projects on regulatory reform, among others in the telecommunications and media sectors, banking, security and defence, and the health sector.

The department is multi-disciplinary, with faculty from international political economy, economics, sociology, psychology, political science, organisational theory, and system dynamics. The wide range of theoretical perspectives enriches our research and facilitates learning and communication. Faculty regularly publishes in internationally renowned, peer-reviewed journals.

In autumn 2006 the department launched a 2-year, English language Master of Science degree in political economy. Experience with the direction is very encouraging, and autumn 2010 the fifth class was started.

The department also offers leadership development programs within the Master of Management degree programs at the Norwegian Business School, including school and health management.
