Important information regarding access to the IT-systems
The students have access to BI's IT-systems while they are active students, and the following year (two semesters). Active students include: Extended students, students with leave of absence and students who retake exams and courses, if it's registered in our systems.
Deactivation of accounts is done twice a year. "Banner Student Web" and the Alumni system is accesible to former students. E-mail forwarding is still active.
If your account is disabled, and you still are an active student, please contact the Study Administration. For other questions regarding the IT systems, contact the IT-advisors (BI Oslo: BU1-010).
Format of email addresses
Student email addresses are in the following format:
Alternative 1: firstname.(initial)
(for instance
or
)
Alternative 2:
(UserID = your username used to log in to BI's systems, i.e. s0601234)
In a few odd cases more than one student will have the same name and thus anomalies to the above-mentioned rule might occur.
Norwegian special characters are converted in the following way:
• æ/Æ converts to a/A
• ø/Ø converts to o/O
• å/Å converts to a/A
Webmail service
Students can check their email using http://webmail.student.bi.no. Username and password is distributed to all new BI students through the admissions letter. If you forget your username / password you have to contact the BI administration which will provide you with the details upon showing a valid proof of identification.
Forwarding your BI Email
All emails from BI will be sent to your BI email address.
If you prefer to receive these emails on your current email address you can set up an email forwarding service through Banner Student-Web at the following internet site:
http://www.bi.no/banner
The forwarding service should be effective within one hour. Emails that are currently stored on your BI email account will not be forwarded; it is only emails received after the forwarding service has been set up that will be forwarded to your other email address.
Checking your email using an email client (Outlook etc)
If you prefer not to use the webmail service mentioned above, you can access your BI email using an email client. In order to do this you need to register the following information in your email client software:
Username: UserID as issued by BI (format: sYY1****)
Password: password issued by BI, typically in a six-digit format.
Incoming mailserver (pop-server): mail.student.bi.no
Outgoing mailserver (smtp-server): smtp.student.bi.no
E-mail address: your BI e-mail address as mentioned above, firstname.(initial)
(i.e.
or
)
Note: The SMTP server (outgoing) is only applicable when you are connected to the BI network. When you are connected to a different service provider you will have to change the smtp-server address to the server provided by your current service provider (i.e. mail.broadpark.no for NextGenTel)
Mass distribution of emails
Mass distribution of emails using the BI email service is illegal according to IT-Regulations. It can also be pursued in court as it might infringe with Norwegian Law.
