The maritime sector is undergoing significant transformation due to the benefits of advanced technologies. Yara Birkeland serves as a prime example of such developments in Norway. The appetite for autonomy on international voyages is present too. Aligned with the 2018-2023 strategy, and following the completion of the regulatory scoping exercise, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) set a clear ambition to adopt Marine Autonomous Surface Ships Code (MASS Code): first as a non-mandatory goal-based instrument effective from 2025, followed by a mandatory code effective from 2028. Meanwhile, industry standards are developing at a rapid pace, not least in the area of shipbuilding and retrofitting for autonomous navigation. 

In a series of Ocean Business Talks, Centre for Ocean Business has a pleasure to host a dialogue on the complexity of the key benefits, problems and prospects with moving towards automation and autonomy in shipping. The dialogue will take both business and legal perspectives.
