My journey to BI

Dream big, go bigger

Ever since I arrived in Norway, a lot of self-reflection led me to discover new things about myself. I’m actually a better cook than I thought, and yoga is my new favorite way of relaxing and concentrating.

Name: Juliana Damasceno de Sousa
Degree programme: MSc in Applied Economics
Home country: Brazil

I used to imagine myself years ahead doing something that would make me think: “this is well worth the effort”. Big achievements indeed require some tough decisions. But the good thing is: All this effort will somehow and someday find a way to reward you.

Revenge of the nerd

I was always known by my classmates as the “class nerd”. Even though I didn't always have as much fun as I could. I knew that focusing on my objectives could take me further. With my record of superior academic achievement. I could complete my Bachelor's degree with Honors Magna Cum Laude, which has opened many doors for me.

I received offers from several Economics master programs from all around Europe. But Norway was clearly the most interesting choice. Considering how different it is from everything I have experienced. And being among the few selected students awarded with a scholarship, made the decision quite easy.

Enjoying salmon, snow and programming codes

So, here I am! My first time in Norway, living by myself, and enjoying the snow and salmon. While digging into several programming codes and economics papers. Norway has a lot of nature to explore, and I love all the possibilities for outdoor activities. You can also enjoy art at good museums and sculpture parks.

As a coffee lover master student, I spend most of my time in the libraries - yes, in plural! There are so many places where you can enjoy a book at BI. Also, BI has a lot of associations as well as partner institutions that stay in touch with the students.

But the best piece of advice I could give you is this: Make connections! Even though a master course involves a lot of hard work. It's important to have some people you can count on during the exams and the the cold and dark winter.

My advice to you: Go for it!

If you are reading this, I can imagine you are considering applying for a program. Wondering if this is the right moment… Well, my advice is: Go for it! At first, I thought this was a decision regarding my studies. But then I realized that it's a decision that affects me as a person. Ever since I arrived in Norway, a lot of self-reflection led me to discover new things about myself. I’m actually a better cook than I thought, and yoga is my new favorite way of relaxing and concentrating.

One of the most remarkable things I have learned during my time here is about myself. My ability to overcome bad moments. You may feel tired and demotivated sometimes- and, as a master student, I guarantee you will at some point. But you can learn how to pass through it and accept that it's all a part of your journey. Learning is a non-stop process, and you don’t need to be afraid of trying new things. So, “Dream big, go Bigger”.
