We would like to welcome you to Simula@bi’s next research seminar in data science. The seminar series consists of talks on fundamental and applied research within statistics, machine learning and artificial intelligence.

This week’s speaker is Professor Olle Häggström from Chalmers, University of Göteborg, Sweden. The title of his talk is “AI risk and AI alignment at the hinge of history”.

The so-called Hinge of History hypothesis states that we live in the most pivotal time that will ever be as regards the continued flourishing of humanity. I will discuss arguments and evidence for and against this hypothesis, with particular focus on the ideas that developments in artificial intelligence (AI) may play a crucial role, and that making sure that the first truly transformative AI has goals that are aligned with our preferred human values is one of today’s most decisive challenges.
