“I am very happy that we have won a CAS project! It provides us with the unique opportunity to spend an entire year concentrating on this one project, and the funds to collaborate with a range of leading international researchers,” says Fabian.

He is Associate Professor at the Department of Economics at BI Norwegian Business School and will head the project together with Kurusch Ebrahimi-Fard from the Department of Mathetmatics at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).

A unique opportunity

CAS funding is special because it gives researchers the freedom to focus entirely on a single research project for a full year, uninterrupted by teaching and administrative tasks. CAS only funds 3 or 4 projects each year across all scientific disciplines.

“This is an impressive achievement. The Centre for Advanced Study is a leading scientific institution dedicated to cutting-edge and curiosity-driven research. Grants like these are instrumental in advancing fundamental science and our understanding of the world around us,” says Provost of Research and Academic Resources Hilde C. Bjørnland.

Fabian and Kurusch receive funding for their project ‘Signature for images’. A mathematical project aimed at making computers better at identifying images. Image recognition technology has a huge array of uses, from Google searchers to self-driving cars.
