Teaching Executive student

The difference between teaching a traditional student and an executive student is not huge, but some details are useful to bear in mind.

  • Executive students often have more relevant experiences than the traditional student, but there are exceptions in both groups.
  • Experience can be both an advantage and a hindrance to acquiring new knowledge, acting as either an extra framework, or a shield.
  • Executive students require a high level of flexibility. The traditional full time student also need flexibility, but possibly not in the same degree.
  • Executive students are used to being in leadership positions in their work environments, and exit their comfort zones when they return to a student environment.
  • Executive students are often motivated for learning from an interest and competence building perspective, and pick their courses accordingly.
  • Executive students can can be categorized much the same way as th the traditional full time student, so it is difficult to treat them as one homogenous group.
  • To engage the students, use more time for case studies and working with cases, in place of traditional lectures.
