Association of Internet Researchers (AoIR) Conference

From Wednesday 30 October to Saturday 2 November 2024 Nordic Centre for Internet and Society co-director Christoph Lutz attended and presented research at The Association of Internet Researchers (AoIR) Conference.

The AoIR 2024 Conference took place at the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom. The conference's theme, "Industry," paid tribute to Sheffield's rich history in steel and metal-working, which played a significant role in the city's economy. Additionally, the theme acknowledged the conference's relevance to the current state of internet and digital technologies.

During the conference, Professor Christoph Lutz from the Nordic Centre for Internet and Society was involved in two presentations:

The first presentation, titled "Freelancing in the Digital Age: Understanding Fiverr within the Gig Economy," took place on October 31 in the Alfred Denny Conference Room. The research was co-authored with Jason Whalley (University of Northumbria at Newcastle), who presented the piece, and Dr. Volker Stocker (Weizenbaum Institute for the Networked Society, Technische Universität Berlin). A working paper version of the research is available here.

The second presentation, titled "Assessing Occupations Through Artificial Intelligence: A Comparison of Humans and GPT-4," took place on November 1 in INOX Suite 1. This research was conducted in collaboration with Dr. Gemma Newlands (Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford) and Pawel Gmyrek (International Labour Organization). The paper has since been published in the British Journal of Industrial Relations and is available here.

The conference brought together the diverse and interdisciplinary community of Internet researchers to share their findings on digital and emerging technologies, including social media, artificial intelligence, platforms, and mobile apps. Thank you very much for many good conversations and discussions!
