In June 2019, Gemma Newlands delivered a guest talk at the HRM Department of the University of Twente. The talk, entitled ‘Workplace Dignity and the Gig Economy: Recognition, Heteromation, and Pseudo-AI’, explored a variety of issues connected to the use of AI in the gig-economy. The talk went into particular detail about the rise of ‘pseudo-AI’ and implications for workers behind ‘false artificial intelligence’. Gemma was invited to give this talk by Dr. Jeroen Meijerink, Assistant Professor of Human Resource Management at the University of Twente, as a result of their overlapping research interests. Gemma is excited to continue this collaboration in the future and is already in discussions on how to fruitfully combine their research.
