Research newsletter 2022-1

Introduction by Provost

We are putting behind us two years heavily affected by covid-19. However, despite all, faculty at BI has managed to deliver great efforts and amazing performances in teaching, research and societal impact. In our research newsletters, that were first introduced in 2019, we share and emphasize some news related to our research activities and our societal impact of research.

Some highlights from the spring 2022

  • The results of the 2021 Norwegian Scientific Index for publications were finalized in April and BI has had an extremely successful year in scholarly publishing, producing our highest ever number of scientific publications (383), which resulted in our highest ever number of publication points (508) a record also in terms of points per faculty (1.28).
  • We published our highest ever number of articles in ABS4 journals (38) and our highest ever number of articles in ABS3 journals (70). In addition, we also published our highest ever number of articles in Top 10% journals (47) and the highest ever number of articles in NSD2 journals (147). This year was also marked by the highest ever number of publications with international collaborators (230).
  • On 16 and 17 March, five prominent professors visited BI as part of BI Research Assessment (BIRA) - a periodic review of the research environment at BI. Based on our prepared material, their meetings and discussions with managers, faculty and administration at BI, the committee will be writing a report, to be delivered to the Board of Trustees in June.
  • The main deadline for submissions to the Research Council of Norway passed on 2 February. Overall, BI was involved in 21 proposals: 16 as the project coordinator, and 5 as a partner. Of those applications, 15 were sent to the call Researcher Project, while 6 were sent to the call Young Research Talents. Eight out of the nine departments submitted at least one proposal.
  • On June 15, the Research Administration Office and I have the pleasure of inviting faculty who have been involved in activities and/or proposals aimed at the European Union’s research and innovation programmes, Horizon 2020/Horizon Europe, to a networking event. The goal of the event is to create a forum where we can share our experiences
    and learn from each other.

You will find more information on our courses and possibilities of admin-support in the Newsletter below.

As always, thank you to all for the important and hard work that you do day in and day out to make BI an even better place to be.

A record year in academic publishing

BI has had an extremely successful year in scholarly publishing, producing our highest ever number of scientific publications (383), which resulted in our highest ever number of publication points (508) a record also in terms of points per faculty (1.28).

We published our highest ever number of articles in ABS4 journals (38) and our highest ever number of articles in ABS3
journals (70).

As if that wasn’t enough, we also published our highest ever number of articles in Top 10% journals (47) and the highest ever number of articles in NSD2 journals (147). This year was also marked by the highest ever number of publications with international collaborators (230).

Over 80% of BI’s journal publications in 2021 have already been made available Open Access: 12% in Gold Open Access journals and 70% as post-prints deposited in BI Open via Cristin. This number will hopefully grow as more publications are deposited and journal embargoes are lifted. Our previous high-water mark was a high of over 97% in 2019. It is the responsibility of faculty to deposit their articles and the deadline to do this is 1st May.

Publications in Financial Times journals were down, having plateaued in recent years.

Courses provided by the Team for Externally Funded Research in 2022

In the Autumn of 2022, the Team for Externally Funded Research at the Research Administration Office will provide the following courses to Faculty:

- A two-hour course on how to develop your Research Council of Norway proposal (13th October).

- A series of “flash courses” of up to 30 minutes that go in-depth on specific topics related to applying for funding from the Research Council of Norway.

Information about the courses will be provided in due time on Workplace and via e-mail.

BI Research Assessment 2022

On 16 and 17 March, five prominent professors visited Campus Nydalen as part of BI Research Assessment – a periodic review of the research environment at BI, last held in 2018. Ahead of the visit, the committee was furnished with documentation regarding BI’s research activities and associated academic and societal impact, including self-evaluations from all departments and research centres. The committee consisted of:

  • Prof. Gerrit van Bruggen (Rotterdam School of Management)
  • Prof. Joost Driessen (Tilburg University)
  • Prof. Nicolai J. Foss (Copenhagen Business School)
  • Prof. Deanne den Hartog (University of Amsterdam)
  • Prof. Johanna Wallenius (Stockholm School of Economics)

Over the course of a busy two-day visit, the committee met with top management, heads of department, the research administration, research centre leaders, and a selection of faculty and doctoral candidates.

Based on their experience, the committee will be writing a report, to be delivered to the Board of Trustees in June. We appreciate them devoting some of their valuable time to helping BI meet its goal of being a leading research institution, as well as faculty and administration that prepared for and met with the committee.

Horizon Europe “Meet and Greet”

On June 15, the Research Administration Office and I have the pleasure of inviting faculty who have been involved in activities and/or proposals aimed at the European Union’s research and innovation programmes, Horizon 2020/Horizon Europe, to a networking event.

The goal of the event is to create a forum where we can share our experiences and learn from each other. Over the years, BI’s faculty has participated in several European funding applications, some of which
have received funding. This forum will allow us to make use of our collective experiences, take the opportunity to meet colleagues across BI, and get advice and inspiration for future funding applications to Horizon Europe! Refreshments will be served.

Research Talent Programme at BI

In September 2022, the Team for Externally Funded Research will launch its Research Talent Programme, targeted at early career researchers at BI who plan to apply for either a Norwegian Research Council Young Researcher Talent grant or a European Research Council Starting Grant within the next two years.

The talent programme will consist of six modules held over the course of the academic year, each module focusing on a particular facet of developing a strong grant proposal. Heads of Department can nominate eligible candidates to the course.

Submitted proposals

The main deadline for submissions to the Research Council of Norway passed on 2 February. Overall, BI was involved in 21 proposals: 16 as the project coordinator, and 5 as a partner. Of those applications, 15 were sent to the call Researcher Project, while 6 were sent to the call Young Research Talents. Eight out of the nine departments submitted at least one proposal.

Associate Professor Klemens Knöferle (Department of Marketing) submitted an application to the European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant programme on 17th March with the title “INTEROSENSE: Enhancing decision making and well-being through interoception”. Professor Eric Breit (Department of Leadership and Organizational Behaviour) submitted an application coordinated by University of Utrecht to Horizon Europe with the title “Supporting Employers in Employing people with Disabilities.” Professor Christian Fieseler and Associate Professor Christoph Lutz (Department of Communication and Culture) submitted a proposal coordinated by the Technical University of Madrid to Horizon Europe with the title “Human rights-based approach to artificial intelligence.” The deadline for both applications was 20 April.
