What is a successful sustainable business?

This is a simple, yet complex question, that has been subject to intense debate for decades. Although more and more companies adopt the language of sustainability and related terms such as shared value, ESG and CSR, there is still limited knowledge about the core characteristics of organisations that simultaneously integrate social, environmental and financial objectives in strategic decision-making, and day-to-day operations. 

Antony has successfully combined an academic career with strong practical impact and a career as a practitioner. Through his work he has been at the forefront of the movement of developing theories and tools for strong sustainability, with a primary focus on flourishing businesses and the Flourishing Business Canvas – a business modeling framework used by thousands of organizations world-wide. In this presentation Antony Upward will share his insights on successful sustainable business from examining strongly sustainable aka flourishing business.

Leadership Talks is a series of seminars about topics related to leadership, change and sustainability, project management and organizational psychology, hosted by the Department of Leadership and Organizational Behavior at BI Norwegian Business School.

Antony Upward

Visiting Professor in the Business Model Innovation group at the Centre for Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Learning, Halmstad University, Sweden and a former adjunct Professor, at the Faculty of Design, OCAD University, Toronto, Canada.

Antony holds a Masters of Environmental Studies in Business Model Design and Sustainability and a Graduate Diploma in Business and the Environment from York University.

As a practitioner, Antony is a Certified Management Consultant with 35 years’ experience, a Flourishing Business Architect and a member of the Systemic Design Association.

Antony was born in the UK and is a long-time settler in Tkaronto/Toronto, Canada – located in the Lake Erie Lowlands ecoregion. This territory is the subject of the “Dish with One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant”, an open agreement to peaceably share and care for the Great Lakes region.  He resides in the Wonscotonach/Don River watershed on territory covered by the Upper Canada Treaties, the traditional territory of the Anishinabeg , the Haudenosaunee, the Huron-Wendat and Petun First Nations, the Seneca, the Métis, and today, the territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation.
