On May 17-19, 2023, several NCIS members took part in the Co-Designing Generative Futures workshop and conference at the Berkman Klein Center (BKC) for Internet and Society at Harvard University in Boston/Cambridge, MA. The workshop and conference were part of the INTPART Triple Partnership for Responsible AI (3AI) project, funded by the Research Council of Norway.
“A Global Conversation About AI”
Taking advantage of generative AI to empower communities, advance equity, and mitigate harm will take intention and strategic study. Thus, the aim of the event was to have “a global conversation about AI.” The workshop and conference brought together 93 decision-makers, experts, and stakeholders from diverse fields, disciplines, and across geographies, to address the opportunities and challenges of generative AI.
Several Members Involved
Several members from the Centre and the 3AI project were involved in the organization of the event. Sandra Cortesi (NCIS/BI, BKC and University of Zurich), Lis Sylvan (BKC), Madeline McGee (BKC), and the BKC were the main organizers. Christian Fieseler and Samson Esayas from NCIS were also heavily involved in the organization, among others by hosting sessions and shaping the program. Other participants from the NCIS were Sut I Wong, Jing Wu, Yunhao Matthew (Xiao)(incoming PhD student at NCIS and the Department of Culture and Communication at BI), Santiago Uribe (former member and current NCIS affiliate), and Christoph Lutz, who were present at the workshop and conference.

INTPART Triple Partnership for Responsible AI
The workshop and conference were part of the INTPART Triple Partnership for Responsible AI (3AI) project funded by the Research Council of Norway. 3AI brings together research institutions in Norway, the U.S., Brazil and Germany to investigate how AI can be made fair, accountable and transparent. The aim is to draw on globally diverse viewpoints, and practical experience to address the societal impacts of AI. The four partner institutions are the Nordic Centre for Internet and Society at BI Norwegian Business School (NCIS), the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard (BKC), the Institute for Technology and Society in Rio de Janeiro (ITS) and the Technical University of Munich (TUM).
