Mindful Technology Interactions: Research Presented at ICIS 2022

On 11 December 2022, Centre member Dr. Dicle Berfin Köse presented two of her research papers at the International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS 2022) in Denmark, Copenhagen.

Recently, Centre member and Assistant Professor Dicle Berfin Köse presented the papers Mindful Technology Interaction: A Habitual Use Perspective and Technological Antecedents of Phubbing: A Hedonic and Utilitarian Content Perspective at the International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS 2022). The papers were presented in TREO sessions, which provide a forum for academics to share their ideas related to research and teaching, their tools or datasets, and their opinions on an issue facing the information systems (IS) field or benefit the IS community. Participating in TREO sessions provided a good opportunity for Dicle to share her research, whilst also getting rapid feedback. Some of the feedback Dicle received were interesting suggestions for future research directions.

About the papers

The paper Mindful Technology Interaction: A Habitual Use Perspective focused on mindfulness as an emerging coping mechanism used to hinder habitual and automatic behavior within technology interactions. Contemporary information systems (IS) (e.g., mobile technologies) with their pervasive nature are increasingly raising concerns due to the problematic use habits they may induce. Some of these behaviors can be phubbing, or nomophobia; a fear of being without your phone. Hence, in her paper, Dicle provides relevant and insightful perspectives about how and why we should seek to understand the relation between mindful technology interaction and habitual technology use from the perspective of dispositional mindfulness.

In her other paper, Technological Antecedents of Phubbing: A Hedonic and Utilitarian Content Perspective, Dicle looks closer at “phubbing”, and its detrimental effects in different types of relationships. Phubbing is a term used to describe the act of snubbing social companies by focusing on one's smartphone. She suggests that investigating content that is consumed by users can be a starting point for researching IS related antecedents of phubbing. Afterall, content that is both fun and informative in the form of rewards and infotainment are among the most “hooking” features of contemporary IS. Furthermore, the goal of her research is to study the effects of hedonic and utilitarian content on phubbing in the context of social media services. The study will also investigate the possible mediating role of habitual use.

ICIS 2022

This year, the Conference was held at Bella Center Copenhagen in Denmark. The conference brought together hundreds of information systems researchers from all around the world to discuss cutting-edge research.
