About the guest network

The guest network at BI Norwegian Business School is based on the UNINETT service "Trådløst gjestenett" (wireless guest network) and is a guest network solution for universities and colleges in Norway.

The service provides easy wireless access for individuals or groups who do not have access to eduroam. The service allows a large number of concurrent users and is a self-service solution based on SMS.

What is Feide?

Feide is the Norwegian abbreviation for Joint Electronic Identity and is the Ministry of Education's chosen solution for secure identification in the education sector. You use the same username and password for multiple services.

Based on BI Norwegian Business School's information about BI students and employees, an electronic identity is created - a Feide identity. With this username and password, students and employees can identity themselves against various digital services, websites, portals, libraries and other services intended for the education sector. The Feide identity also enables increased quality of services through personalization of the services. Feide simplifies the logon process and provides access to local and national digital resources with the same username and password. Feide meets the requirements of the Personal Data Act and provides better data quality.

When you log on to a Feide-service, your login is checked towards the BI database, so you can use the username and password that you normally use when you log on at BI. Employees at BI can change their password as usual via their own PC and students use the self-service solution in the Student portal.

See more about Feide (in Norwegian).

How do I use Feide?

You start using Feide through the service(s) you wish to use.

The way it happens is through login to the service, which in turn receives user information from Feide login service, which in turn will ask BI's Feide catalogue of information requested by the service itself.

When you log on to a service via Feide, you get an overview of which information the service will get access to. The first time you use a service, you must actively consent to the service receiving this information about you. If you do not agree you will not be logged in to the service. Your consent will be remembered the next time you log on to the service if you check the box for it. You therefore do not need to give your consent every time you log on to the same service.

More on how this works is explained on Feide's web pages (in Norwegian).

All BI students who are active or within the implementation deadline and all employees are currently listed in BI's Feide catalogue.

To log in to Feide's customer portal, use the following link: http://innsyn.feide.no

At that URL you will be met by the login page where you must first select which organization you are associated with. We at BI are under BI Norwegian Business School on the English page, and Handelshøyskolen BI on the Norwegian page.

Choose Feide

Choose BI, then Continue/Fortsett

In the next window you must enter your username and password. We use the following format: userident@bi.no, e.g. a9910999@bi.no or s0512345@bi.no with associated AD password, which is the normal password you use for other services on BI.

After you log in, you will see a tab that shows what information is stored about you and your organization (BI) and that can be transferred to the individual services that ask for it. You can see this by pressing your name and selecting an account.

If you have questions about Feide, please contact IT helpdesk.

Services in Feide

Feide services are made available to member institutions through Feide's portal innsyn.feide.no

You can often reach the individual services and log in more directly.

Log in to Cristin via Feide

Cristin is the national research information system. BI's researchers must log in to Cristin via Feide to register their publications.

Username: Your userident@bi.no (eg: a9910999@bi.no, or fgl92006@bi.no).

Password: Your normal BI password (what you use to log on to your BI computer and to BI's network)

(When you change your BI password via your own PC, it is the same new password you use for Cristin. In short, always your BI password.)

The first time you log in
Go to the login page. Choose which organization you are affiliated with (BI Norwegian Business School), press Continue.

In the next window you will see "Login" and a Feide logo. Touch "Login" and enter your username and password. These are the same as shown in the "Log in" section above.

After you log in, a page will appear showing what information is stored about you and your organization (BI). You must give your consent that Cristin can access this. The next time you log in to Cristin you will not see this extra page.

Filesender

Filesender is a service for sending large files safely. Large files can be files that are too large to send by email.

The principle is that you log in to a web service that allows you to upload the large file and enter an email address to which you want to send the file.

The interface is relatively self-explanatory. Should the transfer stop or be delayed at xx% for a long time, just press Cancel and cancel the transfer.
Restart the transfer with the same file and it will continue where it last lasted. You should finally receive a positive message that the file has been transferred. Filesender can transfer files up to 250 GB (it's very large).

On the receiving mail (the one you send to), an email from the service will appear indicating that a file has been sent from you. The recipient then only needs to click the link in the mail and will be taken directly to the service where they can press "Start Download".

Once the recipient has downloaded the file, you will receive an email from Filesender that the file is downloaded.

Eduroam

Eduroam is a global, wireless network that provide members of academic institutions worldwide with free internet access at universities / colleges and several other locations such as some airports. There are already millions of users using eduroam at more than 6,000 access points worldwide.

See eduroam's website for more information.

Why should eduroam be used?

Eduroam offers secure and encrypted wireless Internet access based on the standard 802.1x. If eduroam is available wherever you are, we recommend using this.

In addition, you can use the same user profile wherever eduroam is available. Authentication is done against the user directory of the academic institution to which you belong.

How to use Eduroam?

Staff and students at BI Norwegian Business School must do the following to install and configure an eduroam profile on their device:

  1. Visit https://cat.eduroam.org
  2. Select or search “BI Norwegian Business School”
  3. The website automatically suggests the correct profile for the device you are using (PC / Mac / Linux / iPhone / iPad / Android). Alternatively, you can download the profile for alternative operating systems.
  4. Click the green button and follow the instructions to install the eduroam profile
  5. During installation, you will be asked for your BI username / password. Important! Use <username>@bi.no (where <username> is your employee or student username) and your usual password. If the password needs to be changed, use https://password.bi.no (only for BI employees).
  6. When you are in a place where eduroam is available, you select this network and it will be logged in automatically
  7. If you are an employee or student of another academic institution, select this from the list at https://cat.eduroam.org instead and follow the instructions to install the correct profile.
Alternatively, visit the websites of the academic institution you belong to and follow their instructions for installing and configuring eduroam.
  8. Please note that signal strength and quality of eduroam access points around the world will vary. This depends on how eduroam is implemented at the individual user site. Speed achieved will therefore depend on this and may also vary across different units.
