Participates in expert group to simplify value-added tax

27 January 2019

Associate Professor Anders Mikelsen is one of three members of an expert group that was formed by the Ministry of Finance to evaluate ways to simplify the existing value-added tax system.

The revenue from VAT is about NOK 300 billion each year. So VAT is of great importance for the welfare state, the business community, and for us all as consumers. It is a great honour to be appointed by the Ministry of Finance to take part in the process towards a better VAT-system. It is also an acknowledgment of the academic community that BI over many years has built up around Tax and VAT. I'm looking forward to getting started, " says Mikelsen.

The group was asked to provide at least one recommendation that does not reduce the State's VAT revenues, and at least one recommendation to increase revenues from VAT. The group will also evaluate whether using different tax rates is the best way to maintain such important systems as revenue distribution, public health and environmental work.

The expert group consists of:

  • Associate Professor Anders Mikelsen from the Department of Law and Governance at BI Norwegian School of Management
  • Professor Emeritus Vidar Christiansen from the Department of Economics at the University of Oslo
  • Vibeke Hammer Madsen, previous managing director at the Enterprise Federation of Norway (Virke)

Their evaluation will be ready before 15 May 2019.
